The Raven

The Raven was situated on Wycombe Road and is now used as a restaurant. This pub was known as Charlie Bartholomews at time of closure.
I was evacuated to The Raven in 1944 aged 6 my brother Peter being baby in arms (see photo below), I walked up the road to school I thought miles but it now I know only a few hundred yards. The pub was owned or rented by the Mitchell family a lovely man I believe called Fred, he was surrounded by fields the chair factory down the road, chickens roamed the fields I was allowed to keep any eggs I found in the hedges. My bedroom was the top left window from here I could see bomber planes by the hundreds fly by early evening............little did I know it was on one of these raids that my father a navigator on Halifaxís was killed in September 1943. I didnít appreciate we were at war and have happy memories of my stay at The Raven.
