The Britannia was situated at 22 Churchgate. This pub was present by 1841 when the publican was Thomas Bowden. James Jinks (son of James Jinks, Boat builder, Top Lock, Marple) was the licensee from the late 1850s until his death in 1877. He took over from Thomas Bowden the previous licensee whos daughter he married. Pablo Fanque, the first black british circus owner lodged there with his family until his death in 1871. Fanque s circus was regarded by many of being the best of the Victorian era.
