New Zealand Chief

The New Zealand Chief was situated at 34 New Zealand Road.

This was a Robinson's pub, near the top of New Zealand Road. My father was the pub landlord for a few years around 1964.. ish. I cannot remember the exact dates. We lved above the pub in a suite of rooms there. I remember the brewer's dray staff, lowering huge oak barrels down a ramp into the cellar, using a pair of ropes looped around the barrel: very impressive. They always seemed to receive a free pint, and I did wonder how many daily deliveries they would make. There was a large frog in the cellar, which I guess helped to keep down the insect life. The pub had its own fishing club, using, without any official permission, a small industrial reservoir at the back of the pub. "Andrew's reservoir" . To fish there I used to climb over the wall at the back of the pub.
One of the customers was a window cleaner, who told a story of cleaning some lady's bedroom windows. She was asleep with the curtains open. As he cleaned the windows she woke up, was horrified to see the cleaner, threw off the bedclothes, and ran, stark naked, to close them, inches from his gaze. She must have felt a right fool a few seconds later
