Smugglers Arms

The Smugglers Arms was situated on the corner of Front Street and West Road.
Source: Dean Hardy

When it closed down it was called Fosters Lodge and before that The Smugglers and before that Majors but all of these were "new" names. Since before WW2 and into the 1980s it was The Railway Hotel before that it was the Railway Tavern but most people over 40 would know it as the Railway.
It was built well before1857 (when it appeared on an OS Map) and was rebuilt in 1899.
The All England (Live) Pigeon Shooting Championship for 1889 was organised at this pub and 51 contestants competed. The winner's name is not recorded.
