Royal Oak

The Royal Oak was situated at 55-57 Stortford Road. This pub was present by 1814 when the publican was Charles Abbott. It closed in the 1970s and is now in residential use.
My other half's Aunt and Uncle used to run it back in the mid 1950's to mid 1960's.
They were called Charlie and Elizabeth Lord and they were the aunt and uncle of the well known duo Chas&Dave. Charlie by marriage. Elizabeth's maiden name was Hodges and her youngest brother was Chas's dad.
They used to have family get togethers there every Boxing Day. They had a pub parrot called Paul and a local artist, whose surname was Ritter, did an oil painting of the pub, which was handed down through the family but unfortunately lost in a house fire in 1978.

Charlie & Elizabeth Lord are our grandparents. My brother Michael & myself are the children of their youngest son William Lord. We used to visit every other weekend, & clearly remember the "knees up" with all the aunts, uncles & cousins on Boxing Day. Before moving to the Royal Oak, they had a pub in Hackney called the Cat & Mutton.
