The Hawbush

The Hawbush, at 205 Barley Lane was closed in late 2006 or early 2007. It is still standing, and is boarded up with security fencing around it.

It is unclear what is to happen to it, but the staff at King George Hospital which is close to it, believe there are problems with the planning application, (probably to build flats,) as there is not another pub for some distance. It is a shame it has closed, as it was one of my ‘locals’ before I moved when I got married, and I used to drink in it in the late 1960s/early 1970s when it had three bars like most pubs at the time.

I visited the site of the Hawbush in May 2010 and it and the surrounding gardens are now Hawbush Court, a development of 14 flats and houses.
