The Wheatsheaf Inn was situated on the
Great North Road at Alconbury Hill. This 18th century inn fell into decline
during the 19th century. A facsimile of the original was built on the
same site in the 1920s, but this was pulled down in the 1980s to make way
for the A1 motorway. |

The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge stayed at the
Wheatsheaf in late October 1806. Coleridge wrote to his wife, Sarah who
lived in Greta Hall in Keswick, Cumbria on October 9th from Bury St. Edmonds
saying he was on his way to Keswick. After leaving Bury, he stopped off at
Cambridge on October 16th where he attended university some 12 years
earlier. It is not clear exactly when he stayed at the Wheatsheaf but
certainly after his stop at Cambridge and likely by the end of that week of
October. |
