The print below shows the George Inn as it looked in the late 1800s. John Dixon was a hay and straw dealer in Great Bolton Street. In 1875 he transferred his business to the George Inn. As well as being a public house it was Dixon's HQ as a coach proprietor . He provided carriages, cabs and drags for weddings and hearses, mourning coaches and shillibeers for funerals. The picture has been printed from a copper plate which was found in the old printing room of Blackburn Paper Company in Randal Street in 1946!
The George was boardeed up for some time, then opened as an Italian restaurant, Parmesan and Pepper and later became La Mama
