Red Lion

The Red Lion was situated on Old Church Lane. My father , Eric Wright , was the landlord of this pub from about 1955 to 1957; the brewery who owned it were Batemans of Wainfleet who are still very much on the go. He had to move on as there just was not enough custom in the small village to make a living. He moved on to the Railway Hotel, Firsby around 1957 - 1958 . This move was literally just down the road to the next village. The village of Firsby was no larger than Great Steeping but did have a very busy railway station. I guess he was hoping to make a better go of this pub but the same thing happened and eventually the family sold up and we all moved back to Skegness which was where I was born.

This pub was present by 1826 when the publican was Thomas Meers. It was acquired by the Soames Brewery in 1934, then sold to Batemans c1957.

Chris 1966/1982 I lived here from 1966 aged 3.5 for 16 years along with my brother. it had a lot of land at the back, then Batemans sold it to my parents as long as they did not use it as a pub. so sad when my parents sold it nothing but good memories. no one's mentioned the ghost,it was an old man who wore an old-fashioned bib and braces, he would always smell cigar smoke when he was around. and walk up he corridor down to the bar area.
