The Welland was situated at 70 London Road. This pub is now in residential use.

I think that in the late 1800s / early 1900s my grandfather, Jim Shearer, kept this pin, as well as being crossing keeper for the nearby March line. He and wife Sarah, had 3 boys. Alex who set up Auctioneers Tateson and Shearer, Horace, who set up butchers business in Sheep Market, and my father James Arthur, known to all as Squib, who worked for H. Leverton. When they left the pub they went to live in Spring Street. I remember them being there in late 1930s. I am now 91.
