The Britannia

The Britannia was situated at 493 High Road, closing in 2006. It also used the name Thirst & Last for a period.

This pub was probably established in 1872, or perhaps just before and for most of its history was a Whitbread pub.  In 1994 it was renamed the Thirst & Last, a real ale-themed pub, but this venture was not successful and by 1997 the name had reverted to Britannia.  It then went through a phase as a gay pub, with attached nightclub ‘Farenheit’, before closing in 2005.  It has remained boarded-up ever since.

The Brit was sold by myself in October 2005.  The old disused bar that I converted into Farenheit was included in the sale. It was taken over by 3 separate leaseholders after, at least until late 2007.

A gym has now been built on the site (see photo below).
