The Ruskin Arms was situated at 386 High Street North. This pub closed in late 2009 and at June 2010 building work was going on, although some of the frontage was visible through the scaffolding. The Ruskin was famous as a venue for rock and heavy metal groups, including Iron Maiden.

I worked at The Ruskin over 30 years ago when Joe Lucy ran it and he had his Lonsdale Belt above the bar. There were many bands but my favourite was a band called Gibralta who were minor celebrities at the time. As Tiwas was very popular there were my custard pie fights - shaving foam was the custard and was extremely painful when you got in it your eyes. The bassist would aways sing a bawdy shanty,the lead guitarist was great and the lead singer reminded my of Robert Plant. Their Christmas Eve gig was eagerly awaited. They were so good that I even went to one of their gigs in North London on my night off and the lead singer gave me a lift home in his Ford Capri. My favourite track was something called Mrs Marshall which had a great guitar build up. I wondered what ever happened to them and the girl from Heathrow with them who I was too shy to ask out?
