Three Loggerheads

The Three Loggerheads was situated at 57 Virginia Road. This pub was present by 1722, initially as the Two Loggerheads.  It was a Watney’s Brewery pub and in around 1990 it was renamed Turtles.  A name change like that usually signals the beginning of the end, and this pub closed in 1996 for conversion to private residential use.

Just read this pub changed its name to 'turtles' in 1990. News to me. I know that the sign outside from 93 to 95 was 'The Three Loggerheads'. I never knew of it as turtles. Knew the landlord too. You said the name change led to its downfall. It was actually that it was used for lodgers above pub and used to make more money from that than the pub trade and even more when turned into flats is why it actually closed. Shame, I loved the pub
