The Dukes Head is a large grade-II listed pub at 593 Barking Road built c1900. At August 2010 it was closed and boarded up with no indication as to what would happen to it.

In 1928 my grandfather was hospitalised with TB and was unable to work (he was a bus driver). There was a benefit concert at the Duke's Head to raise money for my grandmother who was unable to support her family. My grandfather died that same year (see the publicity poster below). After, my dad was sent from the family home in Canning Town to live with his tyrannical grandmother in Poplar.

This pub is now used as an events venue, aimed at the local Asian community.

Name Dates Comments David Wood 1970 On 19th March 1970 Black Sabbath played a live concert at the Duke's Head. I lived in the street alongside the pub (St Olave's Road) and had to walk past there to go to an open evening at my school, which was some streets away. I was 14 years old. I can plainly remember hearing every note from the school playground!
