The Favourite was situated at 7
Queensland Road. This pub was previously known as The Volunteer and was
closed and demolished in 2003 to make way for the new Arsenal stadium. |

In the late 1970s and early 80s we often visited
the Favourite (Holloway Road) at Sunday lunchtimes for the music. We were
amused by the coach loads of American tourists ushered in for a pint of
Guiness and whisked away again. Once, the young fiddler on the stage shouted
to me " are you the son of Mr Barrett?" (My father spent some time working
at Bircham Newton Construction College- in the middle of Norfolk). It being
the height of the IRA. Campaign I thought "OMG. I'm for kneecapping". The
lad said- "he's a fine man, taught me maths like no one could." Relieved, we
had some small talk, and more music, more Guin̈ess. Such a pity it is now
under the Emirates! |

Living in a Muswell Hill household that took in students in the short
term, the landlord's friend & handyman, John O'Connor, made sure we all
made our way to his favorite, The Favourite. where I had my first
Guinness (with a good number to follow). At closing time, they'd bring
the big pole out to open the roof transom so all the massive volume of
cigarette smoke could escape. Like a magic trick, it was. |
