The Sun was situated at 120 Askew Road. This pub was demolished in 2013.

The plaque on the wall of the building now standing on the site reads: 'A public house called The Sun stood on this site from at least 1722. In September 1940 a wartime bomb landed on the pub killing 20 people. The only person to survive was a barmaid who dived to the floor behind the bar. Rebuilt after the war, the last Sun was demolished in 2013.

I was a regular from 1964 onwards 16 years old 2 years underage, nobody was bothered back then. My favourite memories were of a fierce man named Paddy Bateson, he looked like a Viking and you did not mess with him. As the years went by I discovered he was super intelligent and extremely well read.. Paddy was just one of the many Dublin characters that gathered there, as a Dub myself I was readily accepted. A lot of the guys were labourers and when at the age of 21 I became manager of a world wide famous retail outfit managing their Flagship store in Bond S't i was still accepted as one of the lads'. A unique bunch of people who never cast comments on others, I now of course realise that this is remarkably unique, I have been lucky to visit every Continent and many countries, got down with the lolcals and discussed their lives, they ALL had bad words for their so called friends and neighbours. Not in the Sun public house!, quite unique, the live and let live culture of the place has never been surpassed in my 74 years.

I have just read the memories of Cavan Durney of his time in the sun. I am a member of the Baitson family and hearing Cavan’s memories about my uncle Paddy was fantastic. Paddy certainly was someone who made a lasting impact. My family were regulars for many years in the sun and agree it was a great pub. Thank you for the trip down memory lane
