The Vine

The Vine was situated at 154 Stanmore Hill. This pub is now used as an Indian restaurant.

I am an Orthopedic and Hand Surgeon in Roma, Italy. In the years from 1990 to 1997 I attended the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit of Professor Rolfe Birch, first in St.Mary's Hospital and then in Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in Stanmore. After long and extremely complex surgical theatre sessions, he wanted to talk about the case straight away in front of a beer in the Vine. Two pints, a piece of paper, a pencil and his great teaching. Rolfe recently passed away but all the good he made for his patients changed their lives and is still going around somewhere in the world with their personal histories. Same he did for us, then young doctors, giving his knowledge, example and attitude towards who is in need, as a real Mentor.

Michael Fitch 1973/1979 Used to walk over for lunchtime drinks from Marconi Space and Defence in the Grove. The landlord was called Mr Gough I think, and we all fell in love with his daughter.
Michael Terrian 1974/1977 I have very fond memories of the The Vine and all those that I came to know there. I was serving in the US Navy (working in Mayfair), living in the Grove Farm house. I had the honor of serving as The Vine's resident "colonial bastard" for several years. Skol Special (aka "a pint of wollup"), Mrs. Gough's Cornish pasties, wonderful lunches at the pub. Some of the best years of my life.
Douglas Zeniuk 1978/1979 Having arrived Heathrow to visit my sister and brother in law... in difficult times. Ira was in full swing and our passports were from Canada, but they wanted to check everyone. I had a working visa
