Victoria Hotel, Chard, Somerset

The Victoria Hotel was situated at 2 Victoria Avenue. This pub closed in the early 1980s

This pub was run by my grandparents, Charles and Lilla Pinney (nee Norris), who previously had been at the New Inn, Wambrook (now the Cotley Arms).  I can remember visiting as a small boy and not being allowed in the snug, which was at the right hand end nearest to the station.  It was used by railway workers and became thick with tobacco smoke.  There was a skittle alley over the entrance to the rear courtyard with, I believe, a small cider press adjacent.  The horses would bring cartloads of apples and dump them by the courtyard.
