A great pub. In the 60s and early 70s
it was run by Marion and John Wilder and John’s brother, Bob. Being a
Watney’s house the beer was passable but the company was amazing. Marion was
one of the first to introduce food. She did a great prawn curry with chicken
in a basket being a particular favourite. The Darts board was very popular.
The wilders were a brilliant team. They used to look after us all very well
with a particular effort being made at Christmas. Very regrettable to learn
that it is now a Thai Restaurant |

First pub I started drinking at, age 15! There was a large group of us
regularly drinking there with the girls mainly from Surbiton High
School. I was 1 of the youngest with my friend Jonathan & the Wilder
family turned a blind eye regarding our ages. We once had a pub crawl
covering all local pubs from the Masons Arms on the Portsmouth Road,
ending at the Marquis of Granby at the Scilly Isles roundabout, about 20
pubs. |
