Welcome Stranger, Herstmonceux, Sussex

The Welcome Stranger was situated on Church Road. This pub is now in residential use.
Back in the days when the RGO was in Herstmonceux us astronomers from London always visited it when we were there. The landlord (late 1970s) was a Welshman and one of us was also Welsh so we got on well there. At closing time we were ushered into an outhouse round the back and carried on drinking. The Welsh colleague (no names as he's a bit more well-known nowadays) had a battered old motor bike at the time. The rear light didn't work and so we borrowed a torch from the telescope dome. On the way back, he drove and I sat on the back shining the torch backwards. It didn't really matter as there was never any traffic there.
