The Fountain Inn was situated at 518 Heaton Road. |

This pub was built in 1856 and takes its name
from the spring that flows into a stone trough across the road. It was
popular with the farming community due to its proximity to Wharfedale
Auction Mart. Once the home of Bradford City Supporters Club. At one point
it actually had a fountain in it. |

I am the "Peter"'referred to by Jim in the
comments. I grew up in the pub from about the age of about 8 (1964-ish)
until I emigrated to Canada in 1975.
We hosted the Bradford Salem Rugby Club for many years and mum served up
delicious helpings of pie and peas for the teams after their weekend games.
Many a wedding or a 21st or such held in the big party room upstairs
The little "Jug and bottle" to the left at the entrance was where locals
might bring a jug from home to fill up and take back. I'll never forget the
local chimney sweep. He'd come in there covered in soot from head to foot
and lay newspapers on the floor, the bar stool and the bar top so that he
didn't get soot everywhere. He'd down several pints to clear the pipes and
then he'd reverse himself out picking up the papers on his way.
So sad to see it gone along with the other two pubs up at Heaton Top. |

1970s-1990s |
I had my first pint of beer here at the age of 15 in
1975. the landlord at the time was called Edgar and was very partial to
a drink (or 10) himself, hence never any age i.d. checks. It had a bar
corridor, a lounge, a tap room a snug and out door toilets. |

Had my wedding reception upstairs.
Also used to play pin ball machine . Highest weekly score won 8 free
pints. A pint cost 2 shillings, ( 10p) |

Lived a few doors up from The Fountain, knew
Edgar & Elsie well….was mates with their son Peter (we kept Pigeons in
the Barn out back)…had my 1st pint in there when I was 16 (they wouldn’t
serve me so friends bought for me)…I visit there whenever I pass! Many
good & bad memories but most good |

Like Julie Jones, our youth was no obstacle
for my friends and I to march here from school for pinball and a pint.
Edgar, in his tweed jacket, would invariably put down his Sporting Life
and ask, "What'll it be, squire?" Although I think Elsie was the
licensee, she appeared not once during our hundreds of visits. The
furniture was a frequent obstacle for Butch, the pub's clumsy Alsatian. |
