The Neptune

The Neptune Inn was situated at 10-15 Whitefriargate.  A grade II* building by George Pycock for Hull Trinity House 1796. Built as the Neptune Inn it was a commercial failure and in 1815 it became the Customs House. In 1867 the ball room is described as '52 feet by 24 feet and 22 feet in height, is now the long room for the general official business of the Custom House'. Trinity House say that 4 rooms were released for shops in 1888 and in 1889 Dentist 'Mosely Simeon' is listed in number 15. By 1892 Bulmer's Gazetteer lists 'Blanchard George Bett, ironmonger and hardware merchant' at number 15. H M Customs ended their tenancy in 1913. The blue plaque reads "2001 BUILT IN 1797 AS THE TOWN'S PREMIER HOTEL. THE NEPTUNE INN WAS HULL'S CUSTOM HOUSE FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS. HULL CITY COUNCIL". In June 2019 Hull Live reported that 'It is believed the grandfather of Alice In Wonderland author, Lewis Carroll, earned his crust at the governmental offices, with a lease being sold to Boots in the 1930s' and 'The décor from the original hotel still stands inside the now abandoned building'.
