Royal Hotel

The Royal Hotel was situated on Lower Briggate. Originally called the New Kings Arms that opened in 1692, the coaching inn was renamed the Royal in 1834. It was demolished in the 1970s and replaced by flats. The facade of the building is a fibreglass replica of the original frontage.

When the decision to demolish the Royal Hotel was made, in order to build the flats, it was decided that the facade should be retained. However, during demolition of the rest of the building the facade itself collapsed leaving the developers with a problem - should they rebuild the expensive frontage? A bit of lateral-thinking brought an unusual solution. A fibreglass representation of the frontage of the Royal Hotel was made and this now provides the facade of the block of flats.
