The Magpie


The Magpie was situated on the corner of Penleys Grove Street and Townend Street. This pub closed c2004 and has now been demolished and replaced by a block of flats.

I lived across the road from this pub and watched it being built. One night a young man sat down in one of the seats and behind him was a lamp that was a fish aquarium, sitting down the back of his head hit the bowl and it shattered. I can remember water pouring over his shoulders and people grabbed pint glasses to collect the fish of the floor and put them into water filled pints.
