The Nut & Bolt was situated on Scratchface Lane and was known as The Axe & Compasses until the 1970s. It is now a private residence called Nut & Bolt House.
The Nut and Bolt, in the mid to late 1970’s, was run by John and Valerie Boulton. A lovely pub, but not the easiest to find. I remember sitting outside while a traction engine went past from the steam fair and Concord flew over – never have a camera when you need one!

Cottagey, with a family atmosphere, this relaxed country pub serves reasonably priced home-made food including soup, cottage pie, moussaka, lasagne and pate as well as ploughman's with warmed fresh bread and mature Cheddar or other cheeses; often, vegetables come from the pub's own garden. Though there is no separate restaurant, you can arrange a full meal - it involves booking a table a fortnight ahead, and as everything is bought - or picked - and cooked to order you're sent a menu and decide your meal a week ahead. There's a sensible selection of wines by the glass besides well-kept Bass, Fullers London Pride and ESB and Morland Bitter and Best from handpump. There are daily newspapers at the bar, kitchen and other country chairs as well as the ubiquitous Windsors, Libertyish curtains and a fine solid-fuel stove. There are teak benches outside on a terrace by honeysuckle, with more seats on grass among roses.

Name Dates Comments Peter Clark 1957/1958 Photo below by John includes the other 3 Sunday midday customers (Roger, Peter and David) from Bradfield College. A clandestine pint or two could be squeezed in between Chapel and Lunch with precise timing. Downhill to the College helped speed our return and in 1950's there was fortunately little traffic to impede our fortified progress. 2022 celebrates a 65th Anniversary of the event.
