A much older closure (1910) was the
Three Mariners,
situated close to the corner of West Street and Chickerell Road. The pub
building largely remains, having been converted to housing after its
closure, with the exterior very reminiscent of the old pub from photographs.
After its closure, a bakehouse was built adjacent to the old pub and this
part of Chickerell was known as “Bakehouse Corner” for many years, although
the bakehouse building is no more. Licensed premises at the end of the 19th
century were split between Beer Houses, where only beer could be sold, and
Public Houses, which could sell beer, wine and spirits. |
