My grandmother, Ethel Mary Taylor, nee Ball, was brought up in the Great Western Hotel and lived there from the age of about two or three (1883) until she married in 1903. Her aunt and uncle, Henry and Emma Selway ran the pub and my grandmother went to live with them and their children, her cousins, after her parents died when my grandmother was still a young child. Her siblings were brought up by other relatives in different parts of the country. My grandmother worked in the pub and met my grandfather there, William Taylor, when he visited the pub while working on the Came estate nearby.
