Rising SUun

The Rising Sun was situated on the corner of Mill Lane and Gosport Road. In 1907 the licensee was Albert Hamper. Five years later Albertís sister in law Julia Filleul, nee White, became the licensee until 1914 when the name on the licence was changed to her husbandís.  The license reverted to Julia later that year.  Julia was John Whiteís Aunt and John often talked about staying at the pub with his mother while his father was away in the navy.  He could remember being caught drinking beer from the drip trays.  When his father, also called John, heard that his wife had been serving behind the bar he decided that he didnít like her serving the men and put a stop to it.
