White Swan

The White Swan was situated on Forton Road.

Henry Sturgess was licencee of this pub from about 1867. At the time of the 1871 census he was living there with his wife Frances Hiscock nee Munday and her daughter Frances Ella Hiscock. When he died in 1873 Frances Mundy became the licensee.  Her daughter Frances Ella Hammond became the landlady after her mother died.  I have account books from the pub dating from 1867 to 1881 and a glass which was engraved with Frances Ella’s name by a pub customer.  My grandfather Alfred Hammond and his siblings George and Alice were all born in the White Swan.
