Grove Hotel

The Grove Hotel was situated on the corner of Woods Lane and Astil Street, Stapenhill.

My Auntie Mrs Jessie Haynes at that time was landlady of The Oddfellows Arms, then went on to be the landlady here with my Uncle Mr Albert Haynes. After he passed away my other Auntie and Uncle took over and they were Mr and Mrs Ball (Mary and Jack) and I remember the pub so well. My parents often helped them and I was always down there playing with my cousins. It was huge with a club room, a piano room, a smoke room, a music room, you name it. I loved it upstairs where there were many locked rooms where American Servicemen boarded during the war. I would ramble around it all and loved the exciting old newspapers and stuff lying about. When my Uncle went into the cellar I'd go down with him and there were little frogs. I remember the barrels being rolled down from a big wooden trapdoor in the street above. It was all very nice and lots of fun.
