The Chequers Inn was situated on Hall End Road. The 400 yr-old Grade II listed family-run inn, which was originally a farmhouse, was completely gutted by fire on 19 Sept 2025, following a stand-off between police and a man wielding a crossbow who subsequently died in hospital on 21 Sept from self-inflicted injuries.
