The Mother Redcap was
situated on London Road. This pub is now used as an Indian restaurant. |

I used to live very close
to this pub, which was my father’s local. I remember that there used to be a
plaque on the wall near the door with the following rhyme on it:
Old Mother Redcap
According to her tale
Lived twenty and one hundred years
Through drinking this good ale
It was her meat, it was her drink
Her medicine beside
And if she still had drunk this ale
She never would have died. |

In September 1902 a new
rail tunnel was being dug under White House Farm, which is in White House
lane opposite the pub. There was a major collapse in the tunnel, killing 6
men and injuring several others. The men were buried in High Wycombe
cemetery and the inquest was held at the Mother Redcap. There is a memorial
to the men in rthe cemetery. |
