The Cow & Calf was situated at 14 Pound Hill, closing in 1999. This pub has now been demolished and replaced by flats.
When we were students in 1980, we would trek to pubs off the beaten track. Once on returning to our college bar, the aged bar-lady asked where we'd been, and on hearing it was the Cow & Calf was most unimpressed, saying it was no place for young men like us. Later we asked her son, also college bar-staff, what she meant: he laughed and explained it had had a reputation for hookers - decades ago, maybe wartime, maybe earlier....
