The Hat & Feathers was situated on Barton Road. |

There were a community of Pembroke
hostels on Selwyn Gardens, and Grange and Barton Road. Between 1980 and 82
The Hat was very much 'our' pub, and Alan Lye (always known as 'Wibbley') a
most welcoming and warm landlord. Front bar was the home of the College
darts team, while the middle hosted memorable cricket club evenings on our
way back from the College ground at Grantchester Meadows in the far-off
times when we used to play two games a week. The very best of days. |

I was an exchange student at Wolfson College in
summer 1984. The Hat and Feathers was close by and welcoming. This is where
I learned to appreciate English bitter, play darts, and take in the
traditional pub experience at first hand. |

As an Undergraduate at Selwyn College, Grange Road this
pub was our "local". One non-uni regular was Kelsey Kerridge, a local
builder for whom the Roofing Contractor I later worked for did business! |

I lived across the street at 26 Barton Road and this was
my pub. The proprietor used to keep a few cold Dutch beers for me and I
would consume 2 or 3 in the evening. Pleasant memories of undergraduate
life (Pembroke). |

My late husband, Jamie Netschert, and I lived in married student housing
at Selwyn College; first on Grange Road followed by West Road. I was
hired as a barmaid, a young American living abroad. I learned to pull
beer out of a keg without getting it on my shoes! Alan and Pam Lye, the
publicans, lived upstairs with their two children. The Lyes taught me
much about English life. My go-to drinks were Cinzano and lemonade and
Babycham. |
