The New Inn was built on Station Road next to Oakington village railway station, for the
usual traveller passing trade of those days. Closed on 21st May 1989, a few years
after the line's closure and now used as a residence. The former pub and
station are on the outer edge of Oakington, by Westwick hamlet. The old line
route is now busy, in its new use as a Guided Busway, between Cambridge and
St. Ives. Buses stop at or next to the original stops and at a few extra
ones. |

My grandparents ran this pub for a short while.
Their names were George Arthur Jones and my grandmother was Mabel Alice
Jones. He retired from the navy in 1927 and was in the Fire Service during
WWII so I am not sure if it was between the wars or after. I don’t think
they were probably there all that long as I seem to remember my mum saying
that my grandmother felt it was too countrified compared with coming from
Bromley in Kent! |
