The Wheatsheaf
was situated at 108 Duke Street. This pub was demolished, along with
The Ship, in the 1950s to make way for
the widening of Strand Street.
The John Paul Jones, was built in front of the combined sites of both pubs. |

This is the pub where my great grandfather had
his last pint of beer before he lost his life. After leaving the pub, he
would have turned left towards the harbour where he would walk alongside on
his way back home to Kells. It was a warm day in August 1914 and he decided
that he would have a swim in the harbour. Unfortunately it is thought that
he suffered from a bout of cramp whilst swimming and ended up drowning. It’s
a sad story I know but the pub is part of our family history, even though
those parts are sometimes sad. |
