Tiger Inn

The Tiger Inn was situated at 4 Victoria Square. This pub is now used as a restaurant.

Grade-II listed as 16-17th century, the Lamplight Restaurant's website claims it to be built in 1493. The building was a hostelry called the Tiger Inn and the photograph is taken from Tiger Yard built on a medieval burgage plot. In 1851 there were about 25 yards in Ashbourne, housing about 750 people, about one quarter of the Town’s population. Most yards had a public house at the entrance, such as the Tiger Inn in this case. It seems the address was ‘Butcher Row’ in the 19th century and Tiger P.H. appears to have been closely associated with a P.H. called 'Horns', the only two I find in Butcher Row. Directory entries include; 1828 'Tiger, Jno. Webster, Butcher row'; 1829 Can't locate a Tiger (Horns is listed); 1835 Ann Webster in Tiger (Horns listed with Wm Webster); 1842 no Tiger but still 'Horns Wm. Webster, Butcher row'; 1852 no Tiger but 'Horns, Ann Webster, Butcher row'; 1855 Thomas Tomlison, Mrs Ann Webster now at 'Buck Horns' Butcher Row; 1870-1874 Mrs Ann Foote, Horns no longer in a Webster's hands; 1891-1895 can't locate; 1899 Robert Burton, still Butcher Row; 1912 unable to locate Tiger. Tiger is not marked as P.H. on the 1920 OS map.
