Horse & Jockey

The Horse & Jockey was situated at 47 Main Road. This pub was present by 1924. Built in 1870 the public house was at the boundary of Somercotes & Leabrooks and the milestone is still in the rear yard (under the outside stairs) in 2013.

Mentioned in the Alfreton & Belper Journal on the 5th January 1894 when the inn was to be sold on Friday, Jan 19 1894 at 6 o’clock.
Records were found, by Mr Ken Hallsworth (licensee), of the ‘accounts of spirit’ in an out building. The ledger is titled ‘An account of Spirits sent our of stock, accompanied by Certificate’ and dates from 31st January 1924 to 6th September 1957, so there is an accurate record of the licensees, between those dates (listed below).

Licensees include:
1887 John Wain
1891 John Wain
1899 John Clarke
1908 Henry A Leivers
1912 John G Allsop
