White Horse

The White Horse was situated at 19 St Peters Street. The pub was reported to be several hundred years old when it was demolished in September 1958. It originally stood behind a pond in St Peter's Street and a tunnel ran from the cellar under the street to the market square. The pub was owned by Adey and White Ltd; St Albans's last brewers whose premises stood on the site of the present Maltings Shopping Centre. The White Horse was bought by Marks and Spencer who extended its original premises next door.  The publican at the time of closure was Percy Sewell.
