The Jolly Farmer was situated on the corner of Orchard Street
and Market Street. Closed in the 1980s it was also known as the Farmers Arms.
You can still see 'Stables Farmers Arms' inscribed in the stone work above
the ground floor windows. It is now used as Cookies cafe. |

I started off as barman and ended up as duty/relief
manager for Jim Blackburn. Until the goon of an assistant manager though
he could do a better job of it and watered down all the stock. He fooled
the area directors, kept his job. Within a year it closed down. |
