A group of us musicians used to meet in the
front room of the Sawyers on Mondays nights, from about 1974 -78.
We started up the Whitworth Morris Men (sic), which met at Walter Lloyd’s
Farm at Shawforth to practise. We were hired to do a display at a school PTA
in Middleton and they asked us if we could play a few tunes for dancing,
which we did - one thing led to another and we became Wet Rake Ceili Band,
playing together for over 20 years. Our Sawyer's early sessions were putting
together set of music for Clive Morton to be caller for. The Morris Team,
now mixed, still survives. We also developed a Mumming play and toured round
the pubs of the area raising money for charity. That has morphed into
another lay which still survives. And the beer was good! |

My wife and I both worked at The Infirmary. I started
work in October 1963 in the Medical Records Department. My wife -
Pauline Holt from Bacup was a Trainee Nurse during the period 1958 -
1964/5. We spent many hours after work with other work colleagues at the
Sawyers Arms. We emigrated to South Austrlia in 1973 and are both now
retired. |
