The Essex Arms was established in 1872 and was owned by the Huggins & Co Brewery of Westminster.  Ownership passed in 1963 to Watney’s Brewery.  The pub closed in November 2007 when the then landlord, and accomplices including a former barmaid, were caught red-handed stealing £800,000 from the Asda store in Leyton, for which they received five and a half year prison sentences.  The pub did not re-open, laying derelict and squatted for a few years.  It was demolished in 2010 to make way for a new Tesco store (see photo below).
