The Britannia

The Britannia was situated at 12 Chilton Street. This pub was established by 1856 and in 1924 was acquired by Truman’s Brewery.  Some fine Truman’s signage and faience tiling from that time can still be seen on the building today.  By the mid-1980s, the pub was attracting a mostly gay clientele and for a while it became Chiltons, an evening-only, gay venue.  It reverted to being the Britannia in 1994, but closure came in 2001 and the former pub is now in private residential use.
