The Chapel House was situated at
62 Chapel Market. This pub closed in
1969 and was subsequently demolished to make way for a Littlewoods store.
It is now used as an Iceland store. |

I remember the pub as a
child, we were fascinated by the beautiful mosaics leading to the entrance,
and terrified of the asp about to bite Cleopatra. I think the mosaics must
have been of Antony and Cleopatra, I think I can remember The Battle of
Actium??
My dad loved it too and I used to be sure that I remember him being quite
upset when the pub was demolished because the mosaics were smashed up. I’ve
recently met someone else who knew it even better than me and he says the
mosaics were sold to an American. Can anyone confirm either story please? |
