Royal Mail

The Royal Mail was situated at 153 Upper Street. This pub closed in 2013 and was previously a branch of the Grand Union chain.

I remember this pub from many years ago around 1975-76. At the time I was travelling a team of Showjumpers around the country and all their names were Royal something so I called one of them Royal Mail after this pub. After winning a show in the area we called by the pub and introduced my Royal Mail to them and left the first Rosette with them which was hung up behind the bar. I live in Australia now but have often wondered if this pub still existed. Lovely memories. A pub filled with lots of homely atmosphere. I was from North Wales and used to stay with a family friend who lived nearby and used the pub as his local. I was fascinated by a chap coming in selling jellied eels. I never did have the courage to try them.

I have fond memories of the Royal Mail in Upper Street, Islington from the early 70's when I worked for the Post Office Supplies Division round the corner in Studd Street. I presume it was named Royal Mail for its close proximity to the Royal Mail Northern District sorting office which it backed on to. Not too many postman frequented it however as they had their own subsidised bar on site. Many lunchtimes were spent in the Royal Mail and although narrow it still had a Bar Billiards table which we made great use of. Being narrow gave it a cosy atmosphere with its dark wood and brass decor.
