I started my drinking 'career' in the Southwark Park Tavern about 50 years ago as I lived in the flats opposite. It was a bit of an old mans pub then but the bar maid, an elderly lady named Nancy took a shine to my pals and I. In later years the pub was taken over by a young boxer named Billy Tarrent. Billy updated the pub to compete with the new and up and coming music pubs and totty magnets such as the "Apples & Pears" and "The Duke of Wellington" near the Old Kent Road. There was also a stripper some evenings in the upstairs room.

I used to go here around 1970-1972 with my husband at the time, Patrick. I can't remember too much, except there was a good, friendly atmosphere and possibly good music played. I do remember seeing Paul Jones, Lead Singer of Manfred Mann drinking there at the bar one night, wearing a very exotic, long Afghan Coat and being envious of it. Nobody bothered him and he stayed for ages.
