Ifield Tavern

Date of photo: 1980

The Ifield Tavern was situated at 59 Ifield Road. This pub closed in 2009 and is now in residential use.
My grandad ran the Ifield Tavern during the War and my mum told me that on one occasion during an air raid a bomb landed close by on the Brompton Cemetary. This caused significant damage to some surrounding houses including the pub. The roof of the pub was damaged and on inspection they found large chunks of granite in what was left of the attic/loft. It turned out that these lumps of stone were in fact broken parts of headstones which had been picked up by the bomb blast. They moved out shortly afterwards (to the Red Lion in Parliament Street). My grandfather's name, the licensee was Victor Thornton.
