General Smuts

The General Smuts was situated at 95 Bloemfontein Road. This pub is now used as an African restaurant called Zizinia Gardens.
I was a regular visitor here from December 1956 until November 1958.  I was a National Serviceman in the Royal Engineers (Postal Section) stationed at Gunsite Camp, Du Cane Road, Shepherd's Bush.  The army camp was situated  behind and between Wormwood Scrubs Prison and Hammersmith Hospital.  I was an NCO in the Orderly Room and every other Thursday there was a demob party at 'The Smuts'.  I recall staggering over the Underground overground railway bridge on many an occasion to get back to camp.  Happy days!!
