The Duke Of Wellington was situated at the junction of Regent Street and 1
Thomson Street. This pub has now been
demolished. |

Three
storeys, from the 1950s, the upper one had weakened floors and was unused,
apart from being an excellent viewpoint for ship launching across the
street. The middle floor was the managers flat but also housed a large club
room for Buffalo lodges, High Ferry Sea Angling club, children's Christmas
parties etc. Ground floor included a buffet and a room off it. Next was a
large bar with two sitting rooms off it. Across the passage was a lounge bar
which regularly held music nights. The cellar was prone to flooding at high
tide. My Da managed it in the 1950s, after managing a tough place in
Newcastle. After that he loved the Travellers, a friendly community hub but
the ship yard closed, as did the railway and the mines. The writing was on
the wall. |
