Eight Bells, Nottingham, NG1

The Eight Bells was situated on St Peters Gate. This pub closed in 1960 and was subsequently demolished.

My mother and father were managers of The Eight Bells sometime between end of war and my birth 1950. They also were friends of the last landlord Percy Landen (ex Angle, Mansfield Woodhouse). The Eight Bells lives on in that its interior was the model for the pub set of the film Saturday Night Sunday Morning. Author of the book Nottingham's Alan Sillitoe having travelled specially from London was one of its last customers. As to the roughness of the establishment, my parents tried to limit numbers attending the ladies conveniences due to frequent scissor stabbing in the competitive world of ladies of the night. "Salts of the earth" when you got to know them, my mother used to say.
